In Jeremiah chapter 32, God tells the prophet to purchase a field from his cousin at one of the worst possible moments of the Israelite’s history.
Their land that had once been flowing with milk and honey was now war-torn and taken over by the Babylonians.
The Lord said in verse 33, “They turned their backs to me and not their faces.”
The people had shunned God, so He, in turn, shunned them.
But in His majestic sovereignty to show mercy and deliverance to the children of Israel the Lord tells Jeremiah to purchase a field to signify that they will again have the freedom and prosperity to purchase land.
Jeremiah tells them that the Lord will gather them all back from the places he had banished them to when He was angry, and now, because of His great love for them, he will again allow them to live in safety.
His plan was for them to have “singleness of heart and action” in the hope and belief that they are the Lord’s blessed children again.
The Lord told Jeremiah, “I may have brought calamity…but now I will bring prosperity…buy the field.”
Today, as you hesitantly survey your immediate situation, you may see nothing but calamity around you. You may even be aware that it is your fault for distancing yourself from God.
But take heart, my friend, God specializes in a plan of forgiveness and restoration.
In verse 40 He says,” I will never stop doing good to them.”
I urge you to turn your face back to him to receive immediate restoration. In doing so, God promises you will live in safety and have the prosperity to buy the land.
”Once more fields will be bought in this land of which you say, ‘It is a desolate waste,...Fields will be bought for silver, and deeds will be signed, sealed and witnessed…,because I will restore their fortunes, declares the Lord.”
